The 39th Annual Kennett Square Mushroom Festival, held on September 7 and 8, 2024, brought together over 100,000 visitors to celebrate the town's rich mycological heritage.

Under the theme "Spawning Future Growth," the festival showcased a blend of traditional favorites and exciting new events.

Cooking Demonstrations by Chef Carla Hall

Renowned Food Network host and Top Chef alumna, Carla Hall, captivated audiences with her culinary prowess.

She conducted two engaging cooking demonstrations on Saturday, September 7, at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., sharing innovative mushroom-based recipes and cooking tips.

Additionally, Chef Hall served as a judge for the festival's Mushroom 'Chopped' Contest, adding her expertise to the competition.

Mushroom 'Chopped' Contest

This thrilling competition featured five amateur chefs who had 30 minutes to create a dish incorporating mushrooms and a selection of mystery ingredients.

Preliminary rounds took place on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with the finalists competing on Sunday at 10 a.m.

The contest highlighted the versatility of mushrooms and the creativity of the participants.

Mushroom Growers Exhibit

Festival-goers had the opportunity to delve into the world of mycology at the Mushroom Growers Exhibit.

Local farmers presented a variety of mushroom species and provided educational sessions on identification, nutritional benefits, harvesting techniques, and tips for cultivating mushrooms at home.

Fried Mushroom Eating Contest

A crowd favorite, the Fried Mushroom Eating Contest took place on Sunday, September 8, at 1 p.m.

Participants competed to consume the most fried mushrooms within eight minutes, aiming to beat the local record of four pounds.

The event drew enthusiastic spectators cheering on the contestants.

Mushroom en Fuego

New to the festival this year was the Mushroom en Fuego contest, held on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Ten brave contestants faced the challenge of eating increasingly spicy mushrooms, with the winner receiving a cash prize and a refreshing vanilla milkshake to cool down.

Additional Attractions

The festival also featured an Antique & Classic Car Show, the Cute as a Button Photo Contest, a dedicated Kids Area with bounce houses and bungee jumps, and appearances by Fun Gus, the festival's beloved mushroom mascot.

Over 200 vendors offered a plethora of mushroom-inspired dishes, from savory breaded mushrooms to hearty mushroom soups made with locally sourced ingredients.

Live music performances throughout the weekend provided a vibrant backdrop to the festivities, with artists delivering a mix of original songs, covers, and comedic parodies.

The 2024 Kennett Square Mushroom Festival not only celebrated the town's status as the Mushroom Capital of the World but also fostered community spirit and showcased the culinary and cultural significance of mushrooms.
